Roundup: Crypto Craziness, Ukraine, Over-the-Top MAGA House Investigations, the Hunter Laptop and Elon Musk in Meltdown Mode
New feature giving a roundup of my social media quick hits
NOTE: This will likely be a periodic, even weekly feature, to consolidate quick hit social media posts, into a longer form writeup, adding a bit of extra commentary, both to pull together them together into thematic groups and share an archive (possibly needed if Twitter does completely meltdown). A bit of old-time blogging action as well :)
Crypto Craziness Continues
As FTX filed for bankruptcy, it was revealed in court filings that a large chunk of FTX customers are from accounts set up in tax havens like the Cayman Islands. Many customers are no doubt criminals evading tax laws and deserving to lose every dime of money they had at FTX. Criminals ripped off by a criminal.
On the good news front, NY Governor Hochul signed a bill to shut down the enviro-nightmare of crypto mining in NY State. (Proof of Work is a fancy name for crypto miners wasting vast amounts of energy crunching madeup computing challenges to earn bitcoin.)
NYC Mayor Eric Adams objected to the bill since he’s been an ongoing shill for the crypto industry. No doubt bought by crypto corruption of our political system. Quite amazing the “law and order” hypocrisy by Adams stanning for a currency that fuels criminal transactions globally.
Helping Ukraine is the Best Use of Our Bloated Defense Budget
The nearly trillion $ we spend on defense budget annually is insane - but the fact anyone is quibbling over the tiny amount of that spent helping Ukraine is equally insane.
Read this good brief in Scientific American against the size of the defense budget in general but goes through multiple areas of 100s of billions in wasted dollars- areas that should be cut long before we even discuss the tiny among for Ukraine.
The New Hate Object of the MAGA GOP: Trees
The GOP wants to repeal large chunks of the Inflation Reduction Act- and they think the American public will rally around their campaign against too many trees in our communities. Like a lot of issues, the GOP is going to make themselves look ridiculous as their fringe craziness goes on full display.
Marjorie Taylor Greene to Investigate the Jan 6 Investigation
As part of the endless MAGA investigations House Republicans will be launching, Marjorie Taylor Greene will lead hearings to investigate the “abuse” of Jan 6 defendants.
Now, I think there are legitimate issues with the lack of bail for defendants, as there are for countless defendants across the country who are punished for crimes they have not yet been convicted of. But again, the hypocrisy of “law and order” types demanding bail for white MAGA defendants while denouncing any reform of bail systems impacting the rest of our criminal justice system is breathtaking.
On the Hunter Biden Laptop Investigations
Simple question for GOP:
Trump administration had the Hunter laptop in late 2019.
If there is a crime involved, why didn't they indict? Why the focus three years on the laptop, later other than political disinformation?
And a Few Potshots at Elon Musk
If his plan is to build Tesla market share convincing MAGA to buy his cars, I will feel so owned if Trumpers abandon their gas guzzlers to own the libs :)
Musk continues to be a serial white-collar criminal, violating the law all over the globe. Read this thread for all the lawsuits he is generating overseas, since you are allowed to casually fire people in many countries as easily as we do here in the United States.
SEIU Launches New Effort to Organize Southern Service Workers
I will leave off this week’s roundup with this pretty awesome, radical message on organizing southern workers by this new SEIU offshoot. It has a great capsule history on how Southern political leaders helped exclude most southern workers from the labor movement- and what needs to be done now. Watch the video.
